Step 1 – Choose A Great Product
Offering the right product will be one of the most important steps you will take. Taking care in this step will be the most important part of the process. After all, nothing you do will matter if people don’t want to buy what you offer.
While no process works 100% of the time, the good news here is that you can know what products should work well. You don’t have to guess and you don’t have to have a sixth sense to determine which products to promote.
You just need to use the tools of the trade and let the market tell you what it wants to buy. If that sounds simple, it is.

Dispelling a common Internet myth
Choosing the right product to market as an affiliate has very little to do with if you like the product or not. Contrary to the popular “find something you are passionate about and the money will come” (which is great advice when you are creating a new product) what matters most now is the answer to one burning question.
Is there a market for this product?
To answer that question effectively, you need to do some market research. Don’t let the term “market research” worry you; it’s much easier than it sounds.
Happily, there are tools to help you do this very quickly.
There are three key factors to consider when choosing a product or service to market.
-
1. Market demand – Do people want it?
2. Price – Will people buy it?
3. Competition – Do I stand a chance against the “big dogs”?
The good news is that it’s quite easy to find a product that meets all three criteria, if you know where to look.
-
To determine if there is a market for a particular product we go to the search engines. The question here is this. Are people searching for information about this product? Your goal is not to create a market, but to find a market you can approach profitably.
The number of searches being conducted for a specific keyword is often the most accurate indicator of the size of the market you will be approaching.
Since we are told that 85% of all web purchases start with someone using a search engine, it makes sense to use keywords to find the perfect product. The term “keywords” simply means the word or words that people use to search using a search engine like Google or Yahoo.
It’s important to get this one straight in your head. The term ‘keyword’, when it comes to search engines or pay-per-click advertising, does not mean one word. It means a word or words, even a phrase, that people use to search by.
- Ezine is a ‘keyword’.
- Ezine advertising is a ‘keyword’.
- Cheap ezine advertising is a ‘keyword’.
- Book is a ‘keyword’.
- Children’s book is a ‘keyword’.
- Book about elephants in India is a ‘keyword’.
All are ‘keywords’, but will yield vastly different results.
There are two tools, both simple to use and effective, to help you in your quest. The first is the keyword suggestion tool at Google Keyword Tool. The second is a free program called Good Keywords.
Tools To Help You Choose A Hot Product
Forums
Spending time in forums can be a giant waste of time. While forums do have their charms, among them the opportunity to speak with top marketers and get answers to specific questions, most forums end up being little more than the equivalent of a digital water cooler where people gossip and disagree.
That’s why you must use forums wisely. Using forums to find great products to sell is very easy. All you need to do is identify which forums to visit and what to look for. And I’m going to tell you exactly that right now.
What to look for: You want to look for sections in the forum, or individual posts (messages) that are asking for Joint Venture partners or for people to test products. These are the key because many top marketers go to these forums to test out product ideas and get feedback on their next product.
These two ideas consistently create access to products before they are released to the general public. And these “beta testers” almost always get first crack at promoting the products that make it to market!
Now, here are the forums to visit. While there are many forums online, these have proven the most effective over the years.
Clickbank
The Clickbank marketplace contains over 11,000 items you can sell as an affiliate. Commissions range from 10% to 80%. Products are ranked by popularity. Going to the Clickbank marketplace is worth a look if you want to see the Marketplace directly.
Google or Yahoo
If you want non-Clickbank products you will need to search a bit. This can be tricky since you will be exposed to many, many advertisers.
